
Depression & Genetics
People who have a close relative with depression are more likely to develop depression. While we have not identified “depression genes” per se, there are pieces of our genetic code that can influence how our brains create, process, and breakdown neurotransmitters – the chemicals in our brain that influence how we feel, behave, and think.
For example, we have enzymes called MTHFR and COMT. MTHFR is involved in the production of all of our neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and serotonin. COMT is involved in breaking down dopamine as well as epinephrine and norepinephrine (our fight or flight hormones).
Some people are born with higher or lower functioning MTHFR or COMT enzymes. This means that some people are better at making neurotransmitters than others. In contrast, other people’s bodies are less efficient at producing serotonin and dopamine.
Also, a genetically quicker functioning COMT means people tend to “burn through” their dopamine faster than someone with a genetically slower COMT.
Since both dopamine and serotonin are chemicals that influence mood, these genetic changes can make some people more prone to depression. The good news is, even if your genetics code for a less than optimal COMT or MTHFR enzyme, it does not mean that you are destined for depression.
Using functional testing such as Organic Acid Testing looks at how well your COMT and MTHFR enzymes work. Because your diet and environment can influence your COMT and MTHFR function, a genetic test may not give you a “real-time” assessment of how your enzymes are functioning.
Once you have determined how well your MTHFR and COMT enzymes are working, specific, individualized nutritional supplementation can help to support your brain and body.
